Islamic Seminary Darul Uloom Issues Fatwa Against Cow Urine Products

Leading Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband has issued a fatwa against use of any product which has declared content of cow urine, describing it as "Najayaz" (unlawful) in Islam. The fatwa came in response to a query submitted with the fatwa division of the seminary - Darul Ifta.

Regarded as one of the highest seats of Islamic education in Asia, the Darul Uloom was asked whether Muslims should use products of a brand like Patanjali - the brand of yoga guru-turned-entrepreneur Baba Ramdev - which have cow urine as an ingredient. In its response to the query (number 68519), Darul Ifta has said any product which declares that it has cow urine in it, should not be used by Muslims as it was in contravention of the tenets of the religion.

The panel of muftis in their reply said: "If it is declared or established that a product has cow urine in it, then its use is not allowed. However, if one is sure that a product of the same brand does not have cow urine in it, then such a product can be used."

Earlier, the clerics of Dargah-e-Ala Hazrat in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, had also issued a similar fatwa against use of Patanjali products, which allegedly contain cow urine. The fatwa was issued in response to a question asked by a local resident, Mohammed Bakhtyar Khan.

"The panel of muftis discussed the issue at length and then came to the conclusion that use of products having cow urine in them was against the provisions of Islam," Naseer Quaraishi, media coordinator of Jamat Raza-e-Mustafa, a religious organization under the dargah, said. He said a panel of two Muftis - Mohammad Kausar Ali and Hakim Mohammad Muzaffar Hussain - had issued the fatwa in this regard on a question from one Bakhtyar Khan.

A similar fatwa was issued against Patanjali products by a Muslim organization, Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamat (TNTJ) in January this year as well. The fatwa had prompted Patanjali to issue a statement in which the company's managing director Balkrishna claimed that only five out of the total 700 products manufactured by the company had cow urine.
