BHUBANESWAR: An Odia student pursuing management degree in Boston University was shot dead shortly after Thursday midnight there, his family said here on Friday.
K Seshadri Rao, a resident of Jeypore town in Koraput district, was shot by an unidentified assailant outside the 100 block of Allston Street at about 2:40 am (American time), his father K Sudhakar Rao quoted Indian embassy in New York as telling him.
The 24-year-old was pursuing an MBA degree in mathematical finance (treasury management) at Boston University School of Management. He was scheduled to complete the four-semester 18-month course in May and had been offered a three-month paid internship in a company there.
Sudhakar, who works in a managerial position in a public sector bank at Jeypore, said he got a verification call about the body around 2 am (Indian time) on Thursday night. "After I confirmed from the documents they read out to me as that of my son, the authorities there declared the unidentified body as that of Seshadri," the bereaved father said. The motive of the murder is not clear yet.
Indian consul general in the US, with the help of Telugu Association of North America (TANA), is trying to arrange for the body to be flown to India, he said. "After I told them that I don't know anybody in the foreign country, the consulate assured to send the body with help of TANA to Mumbai. From there, we will arrange to bring it here, hopefully on Monday," the father said.
A report released in the Boston University website said Boston police found the body lying on the road in front of a house, about a mile from the varsity campus. "The victim had been shot in the head and leg, and was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been made in the case, which is being investigated by the Boston police department and the Boston University police department," the varsity report said.
The varsity report quoted Boston police captain James Hussey as saying, "We have added patrols for the neighborhood and detectives continue to look for clues in this tragic incident."
"Our prayers go out to the family and friends of the student. We are all deeply saddened by his death," the varsity quoted BU president Robert A Brown as saying.
Seshari studied Class IX and X in Jeypore town, Plus II in Stewart Science College, Cuttack, and BTech from National Institute of Technology, Karnataka. He briefly worked as an assistant professor in a deemed university in Bhubaneswar before going to Boston to pursue the management degree. Seshari is survived by his parents and a younger brother, who is a student of National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) in Bhubaneswar.
