Says people have won him over, now he will work to return the favour
When a triumphant Narendra Modi walked on to the stage in Ahmedabad, he could hardly make himself heard over the screaming crowd of his followers. The incumbent Chief Minister’s first address to the people of his State was, at once a message of peace towards his political opponents and a message of hope for the future of Gujarat.
“The voters of Gujarat have proved that they understand the difference between good and bad,” Modi said, saluting the spirit of the Gujarati people. “They are mature and they have their eyes on the future.”
Modi made his listeners recall the BJP’s simple election motto “Ekmat Gujarat,” and said that his campaign had never been based on personal attacks and aggression — a fact that had escaped many political pundits on the national front, who have found themselves incapable of looking at Gujarat without a communal lens.
The voters of Gujarat have risen above communal and casteist sentiments and have embraced a collective vision for the future of the State. They have thought of the future of the State and about the coming generations of Gujaratis.
Modi said that when a Government returns to power, it becomes even more answerable to the people it governs. “Today, you have won me over. For the next five years, I will do my best to win you over,” Modi said to cheers.
