India Becomes Member of Prestigious Missile Technology Control Regime

The Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) finally has India in it as a 35th member after the acceptance application by United States of America.  The strong backing of US to make India a member of MTCR helped India make its way through all the hurdles. MTCR is an elite group which has 34 members. This group controls trade of missiles and technology which does not have China in it.

Through this membership, India will have access to all the high end technologies and surveillance systems related to missiles and weapons. Membership will also make it able for country to sell its BrahMoscruise missiles which it developed with Russia. This makes India an important arms exporter for the first time.

The deadline for the MTCR members to object to India's membership to MTCR expired on Monday, and India's admission followed automatically under this acceptance procedure.

After India formally joins the group, India and US are expected to quicken up the discussion on the sale of Predator drones which can fly 770 miles that is less than half the range of an F-16 to Indian army.

The MTCR Partner countries are: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and United States of America.
