“Do your duty, without expecting results”, these were the
wise words from Lord Krishna in Gita. These were truly followed by T. Venkataiah,
a sanitary worker in Greater Hyderabad Municipality for the last 16 years and now
the time has come to receive the fruits in the form of “Best worker in India”.
The 49 years old, T. Venkataiah was declared as “Best worker
in India” by Ministry of Urban Development and he is will be honoured by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi on August 6 at the launch of the Swachh Survekshan 2017
at National Media Centre, in New Delhi.
T. Venkataiah was shortlisted based on the recommendations of the GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipality Corporation) and selected from among thousands of applications received from municipal corporations across the country.

Venkataiah’s starts his day by punching the clock at his designated sanitation point at 5:30am. From there, he boards the Swachh Bharat Auto tipper and does his usual round.
GHMC’s South Zone commissioner Srinivas Reddy said, “His attendance
always remains 100 per cent, and he does not even take weekly offs. He has a
good rapport with locals and residents. He is known for the accuracy of his
work, especially good segregation of waste; he is very active in sanitation
works. There have been no complaints about him so far. Earlier, too, he has
been awarded cash prizes by the GHMC commissioner for his good work.”
Mr. Venkataiah said “I started work with a salary of Rs
1,200; after 16 year of service now I draw Rs 10,475. My daily job is to
collect and segregate wet and dry waste. I ensure that the colonies allocated
to me, like Babul Reddy Nagar, Saibaba Nagar and Mohan Reddy Nagar under
Rajendranagar Circle remain clean and green without any sanitation problem,”
