Sri Arif Mohammed Khan is a leading statesman, intellectual, writer and Muslim progressive, who resigned from Rajiv Gandhi's council of ministers, in protest against its conservative stance in the Shah Bano case.
A law graduate, he led the Aligarh Muslim University Students Union. He held various ministerial responsibilities at the Centre from 1983-84 to 1989-90.
He has authored a bestseller, Text and Context - Quran and Contemporary Challenges.
