Government to set up trust to protect cows

Hyderabad : The state government will establish Go Samrakshana Trust to protect cows at all major temples including the ones at Tirumala and Dwaraka Tirumala.

The decision was taken at a state-level meeting on Go Samrakshana convened by endowments minister C Ramachandraiah here on Monday.

The meeting decided to constitute a committee with senior officers to visit various Goshalas and suggest measures needed for creation of suitable infrastructure in the existing Goshalas and establishment of new centres.

The government will establish one or two Goshalas in each district with the help of non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

About 2,500 cows are currently being maintained by major temples in the state.

The main objective of the meeting was to chalk out effective measures for protection and maintenance of cows and calves donated by devotees.

The government, besides establishing new Goshalas, will also conduct awareness campaigns with the help of NGOs on cow protection.

It will give land on lease to identified NGOs for running Goshalas.

It was also decided to identify the best performing non-governmental organisations in the field of Go Samrakshana for effective coordination and cooperation with the endowments department, the minister said.
