Nanavati panel term extended

PNS | Gandhinagar

The term of the Nanavati Commission probing the 2002 Godhra train fire and the riots thereafter has been extended once again, by another six months till June 30, 2010.

The Commission, formed on March 6, 2002 soon after the riots had started in the state, comprises retired Justice GT Nanavati and retired Justice Akshay Mehta.

This is the 12th extension given to the commission which has already submitted the first part of its report describing the Godhra train burning as part of a ‘pre-planned conspiracy’.

The terms of reference of the Commission was also extended in 2004 to inquire into roles of the Chief Minister, his cabinet colleagues and other officers in the post-Godhra riots that continued in the State for nearly three months.
