HYDERABAD: As part of its golden jubilee celebrations, the 3rd Battalion Madras Regiment organised a function at Secunderabad Cantonment on Wednesday to honour its veteran soldiers and the families of soldiers who sacrificed their life for the nation.

A cycle rally was taken out at Hussainsagar in the morning followed by a colourful function at Secunderabad Cantonment later in the day. A large number of veteran soldiers and their families from across the state attended the function, according to a press note here on Thursday.

Senior veteran officers, who addressed the gathering, recounted their war experiences. The Commanding Officer of the battalion extended support to the families of war heroes. The battalion will conduct similar functions at Bangalore, Trivandrum and Chennai over the next few days to reach out to ex-servicemen and veteran soldiers of the Madras Regiment.

The 3rd Battalion Madras Regiment known as 'THAGDAS' is one of the most illustrious battalions of the famous Madras Regiment of the Indian Army. The battalion was raised in 1962. The Battalion traces its roots to 1777 when it was first raised at Trichi Fort. It boasts of a rich and glorious history having won a number of awards and medals both on the borders as well as in counter insurgency operations. It is the first battalion of the Indian Army to serve twice on the Siachen Glacier where posts are higher than 20,000 feet.
