ISRO traces mythical Saraswati origins to Himalayas

River Saraswathi

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has studied the palaeochannels of North-West India and related it to the channels of mythical river Saraswati, sources in the Science and Technology Ministry said.

The ISRO study team had prepared an integrated palaeochannel map of the river right from the origin -- Himalayas to Rann of Kutch.

The origin of the course of river Saraswati was linked to Himalayan perennial source through Sutlej and Yamuna rivers and the satellite image was a source of help to link the river that is now extinct, sources said.

Giving details of the Indian Remote Sensing data along with digital elevation model, the sources said the images were multi-spectral, multi temporal having the advantages of synoptic view which were useful to detect palaeochannels and these were validated using historical maps, archeological sites, hydro-geological and drilling data.

It was observed that major Harappan sites of Kalibangan (Rajasthan), Banawali and Rakhigarhi (Rajasthan) Dholavira and Lothal (Gujarat) lay along River Saraswati, sources said. UNI
