Gurdaspur attack: Army helping Punjab Police cordon off the area but not directly involved in operation





Gurdaspur: In an attack in Punjab early on Monday morning, terrorists opened fire at Gurdaspur police station. One terrorist has been killed and four others are holed up inside the police station in Dinanagar in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab. Firing is still on. The terrorists are dressed in Army uniform.
# I can't understand why time and again cross border terror incidents are taking place when we want good relations with our neighbour. We will not be the first to strike, but if we are hit, we will give a befitting reply. We want peace with Pakistan, but not at the cost of national honour: Rajnath Singh.
# The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team of Punjab Police is leading the operations. Army is in the outer cordon providing support to the Punjab Police. The NSG is not involved in the operation.

# Border Security Force (BSF) is on alert after the terror incident. "We are on alert. We have enhanced vigil along the entire International Border with Pakistan. Our senior officers are currently in the Gurdaspur Sector," BSF IG, Punjab Frontier, Anil Paliwal said.

# Intelligence sources say that six civilians have been killed in the attack. However, there is no official confirmation so far. Two deaths are also being reported from firing in an adjoining hospital.
# MoS Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju: It is a serious attack but there is no news of any hostage crisis. Too early to give the exact number of casualties as of now. Some people have been admitted to the hospital.

# Punjab CM's Media advisor Harcharan Bains: Our attempt is to capture the terrorists alive so that we get to know details from them. Our aim is to limit the extent of damage they do. State government and Central government working in close coordination. We have no information on what is going on inside the police station. We have not been able to reach inside the police station. The forces on the ground are coordinating with the other forces.
# Pratap Singh Bajwa, Congress: I fear it could be a joint operation between the Jammu and Kashmir terrorists and Khalistani terrorists who are under training in Pakistan's Punjab.
# Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been briefed about the operation. He is said to be closely monitoring situation. Further call on strategy will be taken after the final report of the MHA.
# Army has been called in for the operation.
# Sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs say that it is too early to name any group. They claim that there is no hostage crises. All forces have been kept on stand by.
# Home Minister Rajnath Singh has convened a meeting of all top officers relating to internal security including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Union Home Secretary LC Goyal among others to discuss the Gurudaspur attack.
# Home Minister Rajnath Singh has spoken to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who apprised him of the developing situation in Gurudaspur. Soon after the Home Minister tweeted saying, "the MHA is monitoring the situation in Gurudaspur and Punjab. I am confident that the situation will be soon brought in control."
