National Handloom Day – Seven Points raised by PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Chennai today to mark the celebrations of the first National Handloom Day, where he also presented the Sant Kabir Awards and National Awards.
It was on 7th August of 1905 when ‘Swadeshi Movement’ was launched. To mark the Swadeshi Movement, National Handloom Day will be celebrated every year on the 7th of August.
Prime Minister Modi addressed the people gathered to celebrate the first National Handloom Day. The main points raised by him during the speech were:
India is home to several world famous handloom products. The handloom sector has inherent strengths that we need to market.
Can we not enhance use of handlooms in our daily lives.
Fashion and design education in India also needs to be re-oriented. We need to make our handloom tradition the centrepiece of fashion for India and the world. We have somewhere fallen short of global branding of our handloom.
Urged film makers to use handlooms, handicrafts and khadi. We should enlarge the scope of e-commerce for sale of handloom products.
Government is committed to extend robust social security cover to weaver families. Congratulate all those awarded today. Their expertise should be utilised for skill development programmes and production of master pieces.
Innovative design backed by good marketing is essential for promotion of hand looms. Handloom products should have zero defect and they should have zero effect on the environment that is the way to make them popular world over.

When PM Modi landed at the Chennai Airport he was warmly received by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and Governor of Tamil Nadu Konijeti Rosaiah. BJP Karyakartas were also present in large numbers to receive PM Modi at the Chennai Airport.
