The 12-hour Assam bandh called by the All Assam Minority Students' Union
(AAMSU) today turned violent with government officials and mediapersons
attacked leading to imposition of indefinite curfew in some areas.
Blaming BJP and AIUDF for making provocative statements, Chief Minister
Tarun Gogoi urged political parties and outfits to refrain from calling
bandhs which were inflaming passions in violence-hit areas.
"I am not happy about the way in which BJP and All India United Democratic Front and some other outfits are conducting themselves. I appeal to them not to make any more provocative statements," he told reporters here.
Referring to yesterday's bandh called by Bajrang Dal and the one today called by the AMSU he said "This is not a time to call bandhs. Instead of bringing calm, bandhs only increase the temper and also affect the economy. I urge all parties and outfits to refrain from calling bandhs."
Admitting that the state continued to be rocked by incidents of violence, Gogoi said the army has been given power to seize arms and was confident that results would soon be visible.
Indefinite curfew was clamped in Tezpur town after an youth was critically injured by bandh supporters when he tried to stop them from forcibly closing down shops near Mahabhairab Temple in the heart of the town, police sources said.
Bandh supporters attacked the vehicle of Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner Tapan Chandra Sarmah and three police vehicles escorting him near Idgah Maidan in Tezpur, the sources said.
AAMSU activists attacked the vehicle of Tezpur Circle Officer Sarangapani Sarma and officer-in-charge of Bhojkhowa police station at Bhojkhowa and damaged it.
Bandh supporters damaged two motorcycles and assaulted a correspondent of a private news channel and snatched away his camera in Tezpur.
Indefinite curfew was also imposed in 26 villages of Ambagan under Samaguri assembly constituency in Nagaon district after a clash between bandh supporters and local people who were opposed to the shutdown, the sources said.
Block Congress President Nepal Sarkar and Zila Parishad member Dipak Biswas were injured in the clash, they said.
The police opened fire on bandh supporters injuring three after they blocked NH-31 at Joghighopa in Bongaigaon district, the sources said.
In Dhubri district, the CRPF and the police opened fire to disperse bandh supporters, who burnt an effigy of Bodoland Territorial Council chief Hagrama Mohilary Mohilary near Kali Mandir on NH 31 at Gauripur, they said.
Bandh supporters also blocked NH-31 at New Hatipota near Bilasipara, ransacked the Bodoland Peoples' Front office in Gauripur as well as eight shops at Asharkandi besides forcibly closing shops at Gariapatti, the sources said.
Bandh supporters tried to forcibly close shops at Jagiroad in Morigaon district with the public opposing it.
Several of those opposing the bandh were taken into preventive custody with the district administration being blamed for supporting bandh enforcers.
The bandh was total in Mankachar and South Salmara areas bordering Bangladesh.
Mediaperons were also attacked by bandh supporters at Barpeta and Sibsagar.
Sporadic violence was reported from Barpeta, Morigaon, Nagaon and Sibsagar.
Kokrajhar was, however, free from bandh-related violence.
