Earlier, on Friday, the institution was closed citing the incidents emerged soon after the exit of Indian cricket team from T20 World Cup in semi-finals against West Indies.
In a statement Dr. Rajath Guptha, director of NIT, reassured
the students, faculty and parents that the temporary situation arising out of
tension from disappointment at the outcome of the cricket match on 31 st March
had been overcome.
The director also assured the parents, students and all
concerned that there is no cause for
apprehension and students are safe,
secure and on campus.
On late Thursday night, some local students in the NIT
Srinagar campus fired crackers and celebrated the defeat of Indian team T20
World Cup.
Taking this as serious offense, students mostly from outside
Jammu and Kashmir took out a protest march holding Indian flag in the afternoon
of Friday. In this charged atmosphere at campus, some Kashmiri students raised
pro-Pakistani slogans and non-locals raised pro-India and anti-Pakistan slogans,
before things were controlled by police and CRPF jawans who were called in by
college authorities. Police fired teargas canisters to disperse the gathered
students where some mild stone pelting took place on the windows of hostel
buildings.
