Central Govt Asks Jammu and Kashmir To Identify Land for Rehabilitation of Kashmiri Migrants

The Central government has requested Jammu and Kashmir government to identify suitable land in the Kashmir Valley, to rehabilitate Kashmiri migrants who left the valley due to onset of militancy/terrorism in early 1990s.

In a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, minister of state for Home Affairs, Shri Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said once the land is identified for composite townships further action would be taken.

Across the country there are about 62,000 registered Kashmiri migrant families, who left from the Kashmir valley due to militancy/terrorism in the Jammu and Kashmir in the early 1990s.

There are nearly 40,000 registered Kashmiri migrant families living in Jammu, about 20,000 in Delhi/NCR and about 2000 families are settled in other parts of the country.
On 18th November 2015, the Indian government approved a rehabilitation package involving an estimated expenditure of Rs. 2000 Crore for providing additional 3000 state government jobs to the Kashmiri migrants and construction of 6000 transit accommodations in the Kashmir valley for the Kashmiri migrants to whom state government jobs have been provided/will be provided.
