Protesters caned, police sounds high alert in Hyderabad


Hyderabad: The city police was put on high alert with the arrest of MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi on Tuesday evening. His supporters and MIM party workers gathered in large numbers in front of Gandhi Hospital and police had to resort to caning to disperse the crowd.

Mr Owaisi has been charged on two counts for making a “hate speech” some days ago.

Initially, 10 platoons of city police and APSP were present at the hospital but additional forces were moved in by evening. Police barricaded the RTC Crossroads, Musheerabad Crossroads and stopped traffic heading towards Gandhi Hospital.

Hyderabad commissioner of police Anurag Sharma said the force had to be extra vigilant in old city of Hyderabad, Musheerabad, Asifnagar and all communally-sensitive areas in the city.

MIM supporters clash with policemen

Hyderabad: MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi’s supporters and party workers challenged the police in front of his residence in Banjara Hills in the morning when he was moved to hospital. Outside the hospital, the supporters raised slogans hailing the MLA and attempted to climb over the gates. Many in the crowd seemed to be minors. There was heavy security at the CM’s camp office and the secretariat. Traffic stalled at Padmaraonagar, Musheerabad and Chilkalguda for some time in the evening.

"The traffic situation was due to delay in information about his arrest. It was a surpriseannouncement and had to be communicated within minutes to the ground duty staff todivert routes and handle traffic. However, the traffic management has been good evenafter the surprise and delayed announcement," said additional commissioner of police,traffic, C.V. Anand.
