Bhagwat talks about RSS' dream of a Ram temple in Ayodhya

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) feels that within two or three years a grand Ram temple could be built at the Ayodhya site after the Supreme Court took a final view on the complex issue.

The Allahabad High Court judgment on the disputed site's main title suit had encouraged the RSS, as the verdict gave presiding deity ‘Ram Lalla' rights over a major portion of the land where the Babri Masjid stood before it was demolished in 1992.

The ruling also gave it the right over the portion of the land that was under the middle dome of the Masjid where it was installed in December 1949 and which the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the RSS have claimed to be the “exact” birthplace of Ram.

Now, irrespective of this judgment that also recognises the claim of two other parties, Muslims and the Nirmohi Akhara, to portions of the Ayodhya site, the RSS is confident of getting the “entire” disputed plot to build a Ram temple on it. This became clear from what the RSS chief himself said during a discussion here on Monday.

Speaking at a symposium on ‘Global Scenario: Bharat, Sangh and We,' RSS chief Mohanrao Bhagwat said, “It may take two or three years to take possession of the entire piece of land at Ayodhya. I feel the apex court will take this much time to decide about the case. The moment we get land, a grand temple will be built at the birthplace of Bhagwan Ram in Ayodhya.”

Although most of his speech was about man's co-existence with nature, he went out of his way to talk about the RSS dream of a Ram temple in Ayodhya, although this issue is not much talked about in the BJP, political wing of the RSS, for party leaders admit that this is a virtually dead issue in relation to electoral politics.

Recently, the BJP has reduced what was once its main issue to mere tokenism, knowing that as far as electoral politics is concerned, it is no longer a subject that brings out the voters, even if it continues to excite its cadre.

In the ongoing election campaign in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP is trying very hard to revive its fortunes, the two simultaneous “yatras” of its Brahmin leader Kalraj Mishra and “Thakur” face Rajnath Singh converged to end in Ayodhya. That was the start and end of its homage to the Ram temple issue. For, the rest of the campaign has been about corruption, law and order, governance and development.
