Wanted, a leader who can make India superpower: RSS chief

PATNA: RSS chief MohanBhagwat said here on Sunday the country today needs 'eknayak (one leader)' who not only performs but also has the capacity to lead it, along with its diverse groups of people with varied cultural roots, to fulfill the long-cherished aim of being a 'mahashakti (superpower).'

He said India today was plagued by two extreme emotions of both hope and disappointment with regard emerging as "a successful emerging economy or a superpower". "If there is hope, there is also disappointment. If the scene is white, it is also black. The country today needs one leader who delivers and performs and is also able to take along with him all sections of society," Bhagwat said.

Addressing a pre-Guru Purnima gathering of RSS rank and file, also attended by top Bihar BJP leaders, here on Sunday on the second day of his three-day Bihar visit, Bhagwat said this "one leader" need not be 'sarvagun sampanna (having all the attributes and qualities of a good leader)', but he should be capable of leading the people whose ancient credo regarding "unified identity" has been "unity in diversity" that accommodated even the "mutthi bhar (small groups)" of invaders.

Bhagwat said, "Hindutva is the basis of our unity. Hindutva is the identity of all peoples who live in India." He said knowledgeable Muslims should spread the idea that the final rituals of death in a Muslim family is not complete if a part of the earth where it lives is not accompanied to the grave with him.

Incidentally, Bhagwat, all through his deliberation, did not take the name of either the Congress, which has ruled the country for most of the post-Independence period, or of the BJP. Similarly, he named neither Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, whom the RSS has propelled as that near-certain "one leader" from the BJP side to lead NDA during the 2014 parliamentary polls, nor any other leader from any other outfit or combine.

Given his underlying mood, Bhagwat said, "All have contributed something to the development and rise of the country, but India has failed to emerge as superpower, a status that has been sought for the last couple of years."

In an oblique reference to the UPA, in line with the perception of both the RSS and BJP, Bhagwat added, "Those who ought to have performed have failed to deliver. Since they have failed, they should be changed."
