NIA Chief Says No Evidence Against Colonel Purohit in Samjhauta Express Case

“Lieutenant Colonel Purohit was not involved in the Samjhauta express blast case. No evidence has been found against him and not involved in case,” said Sharad Kumar Director General of National Investigation Agency (NIA).

"No change has been made in the chargesheet in Samjhauta express blast case, inquiry is going on smoothly," Sharad Kumar told ANI.

Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Purohit was one of the main accused in the Samjhauta and Malegaon blasts cases and he has been in jail for over seven years without bail.

On April 4, Colonel Purohit has written a letter to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar requesting restoration of his honour. He also claimed that he was falsely implicated and has been behind the bars for over seven years now.

The case pertains to a criminal conspiracy, which resulted in bomb blasts in the Samjhauta Express train near Panipat in Haryana on 18, February 2007.

The blast and the consequent fire in the train resulted in the loss of 68 lives and injuries to 12 train passengers including women and children travelling in the train.
