Non-local students belonging to NIT Srinagar were strongly
demanding for relocation of the campus to ensure their safety and smooth
running of academics in their talks with Niraml Singh, deputy chief minister of
Jammu & Kashmir. Students also allege that some members of faculty are threatening
to influence their exams and projects.
On Friday, students within the campus tried to take out protest
march seeking the punishment for the police involved in lathicharge which left
scores of students injured, and permanent security from CRPF at NIT.
NIT Srinagar management said the students concerned with the
security and current environment at the campus in attending the exams as planned
from April 11 will be given new schedule later in keeping view their of the students career.
Several colleges in the Jammu region, as well as in other
parts of the country have raised the national flag, as well as team of 150
students from different states gathered in Delhi and started a journey to
Srinagar under the banner of ‘Chalo NIT' with national flags on cars, bikes and
buses to show solidarity with the non-local students of NIT.
In an interview with local TV channel, J&K Chief
Minister Mehbooba Mufti said the incident at NIT is non-issue, but being highlighted
by certain people as ‘communal incident’ and informed the same view to Human Resources
Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani.
