The University of Hyderabad (UoH) served suspension notices
on two of its faculty members K.Yesu Ratnam and Tathagata Sengupta, and a memo demanding
an explanation for not informing their police detention for over 48 hours.
On March 22, associate professor Yesu Ratnam and assistant professor
Sengupta were detained along with students who were protesting in front of the residence
of Vice Chancellor’s Appa Rao Podile, who resumed office after going on leave
in the wake of protests by a section of students of university.
Vipin Srivastava, pro Vice-Chancellor-I of UoH, said that
the decision to suspend the two faculty members was taken on June 6, during the
Executive Council meeting and these suspension orders are effective from the
day of their arrest, and it will be reviewed within 90 days.
According to section of 14 of the central Civil services(
classification, Control, and Appeal) Rules: A government servant shall be
deemed to have been placed under suspension by an order of the appointing
authority with effect from the date of his detention, if he is detained in
custody, whether on criminal charge or otherwise, for a period exceeding
48-hours.
The university was tense for quite some time following the
suicide of Ph.D scholar Rohit Vemula on January 17, 2016.
