Refugee Day, a Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) school was opened at Balapur,
Hyderabad, for 300 Rohingya refugee students on Monday.
Dubbed as the first
educational institution for refugees in Telangana, the school would be run by
NGO Save the Children and would provide 12-hour services to Rohingya refugees
along with three meals a day. “Two more schools are being mulled to accommodate
all refugee children. We are also planning schools for street children as
well,” said state transport minister P Mahender Reddy.
There are 11,893 Rohingya
refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in India. They are spread
across various parts of the country. Hyderabad is estimated to have sheltered
around 3,500 Rohingyas.
